Our June field trip was a visit to Dyffryn gardens in the Vale of Glamorgan. Six of us made the trip – Tracy Onions, Kevin Morgan, Nigel Goode, Sue Anslow, Graham Porritt and Kevin Doyle.
The estate itself has origins dating back to the 7th century but the current house and grounds were created by the wealthy coal merchant John Cory in 1893. The house and gardens are currently owned by the Vale of Glamorgan council but maintained and run by the National Trust.
The gardens are extensive covering sweeping lawns, grand flower beds, an Italian Garden, ornamental ponds, an arboretum and winding trails. The ponds host large numbers of dragon and damsel flies including 4 Spot Chasers, Emperors, Black-tailed Skimmers, Azure Damsels and a Large Red Damsel. The photographic opportunities are varied ranging from architecture through vistas to wildlife.
A thoroughly enjoyable day out fully appreciated by our group. An excellent venue which is on our doorstep.
