During a recent early summer excursion to Skomer Island, situated off the rugged coast of Pembrokeshire, I had the pleasure of witnessing one of Britain’s most extraordinary wildlife spectacles—the annual return of thousands of breeding seabirds. Renowned for its rich biodiversity and dramatic coastal scenery, Skomer proved to be a haven for avian life and a deeply memorable experience.
Observations & Highlights:
- Puffins stole the spotlight with their vibrant bills and comical waddles, congregating in large numbers near their burrows and providing ample photographic opportunities.
- Razorbills and Guillemots, their sleek black-and-white plumage glistening against the sea cliffs, formed densely packed colonies that echoed with distinctive calls.
- Swallows danced overhead in swift, acrobatic bursts—symbols of summer in full swing.
- Oystercatchers patrolled the shoreline with bold plumage and sharp cries, while Linnets flitted among the scrub with their delicate song.
- Several species of Gulls were present, ever watchful and vocal, adding to the island’s energetic ambiance.
- And there were many other birds species present.
